Nephila clavipes can be found in the warmer regions of the Americas, though 26 other species can be found throughout the world. They are named for their golden silky web they weave, which can be brightly seen in the reflecting sun.

Common names are golden orb-weaver, giant wood spider, and banana spider, and are sometimes called writing spiders due to the zigzag patterns that can be found in their web.

I really love these orb-web weavers...we often have a large number of them around from August until it gets "cold" maybe November...but we didn't have nearly the amount this year...so no chance for pictures :(

that's too bad. i'd be interested to see other shots.

I'll have to wait until next summer (I've only been back into photography for about 6 months so I don't have a backlog of shots to dig into...) I like - or at least don't have to kill everyone I see - spiders so I will be working with them again when they're around...but in the meantime check out some of my daughter's :iconcaitiekabob: encounters [link] . Pimp my Abdomen [link] is a Widow from our back patio and [link] this charmer was in my bathroom a few days ago!

She's just turned 18 and it really is amusing how brave she is when she's got the camera between the spider/bee/bug and herself :D

there's nothing like being completely oblivious when taking a photo. I've had spiders shake their webs at me, and I'd pull back and realize that I'm only a foot and a half away from it, with a short lens :) My wife makes fun of me because I will walk while looking through the lens, trying to get a shot, and won't notice anyone or anything that's not in the frame.

With Cait's new (last summer) camera her macro means you're right on top of the subject ... like maybe 3". !! As long as it's not a jumping spider or spitting cobra hee, hee!

Hehe, really good shot here. I've heard of these spiders before, but I'm not very familiar with them. I've never actually seen one in real life, I don't think. =( This is really cool though. They aren't dangerous at all, are they? T_T
:iconringtaillemur:
no, they're harmless to humans, except maybe a sting from the bite. though i've never even personally heard of anyone being bitten by them.
